The Downward Spiral

In the three repetitions of the phrase “God gave them over” in Romans 1:24, 26, and 28, many respected commentators see a downward progression12— a kind of three-step process that is evident when God hands a nation over to the consequences of its sin. Let's look at these three steps.

Step 1—Sexual Revolution

The first signpost that God has turned a nation over to its own sin is rampant sexual immorality, or what we might call a “sexual revolution.” We see this in Romans 1:24: “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another” (NIV).

In other words, God allows people to plunge into the full depths of their hedonism, attempting to satisfy their inner hungers and cravings apart from Him.13 When men and women abandon God, He abandons them, and the first indication that this has happened is overt sexual impurity. Of course, every nation in human history has had sexually immoral citizens. But sexual revolution arrives when God completely turns people over to their lusts, removing the outward restraints and allowing them to rush wantonly downward. When the true God is dismissed and rejected, the mental and spiritual vacuum that remains is quickly filled with all kinds of sexual sin.

According to a recent article in Newsweek, “TV sex has become more frequent—and much more graphic—in the past year.”14 Here are just a few of the new shows: Showtime has a program titled Californication. There's a sexually explicit soap opera, Tell Me You Love Me, and there are movies glamorizing sexual liberation, like Sex and the City. CBS aired a pilot in June 2008 titled Swingtown (as in “swingers” or wife swapping) that is “a frank exploration of sexual… liberation of the 1970s.”15
